Double wall boxes

The double wall cardboard box - simply reliable

Whether in the business or private sector, when it comes to transporting or shipping objects, people generally use boxes and cartons made of corrugated board. Since its invention in 1871, corrugated board has remained the favourite material for transport and storage. Since then, a lot has happened in the production of corrugated board, as production has become much more complex. The different types of cardboard packaging made from it are also more diverse today. The characteristic structure of corrugated board packaging has remained the same over the years. As a rule, 1-corrugated cardboard packaging is used to transport goods of all kinds. To ensure that even particularly heavy items arrive safely at their destination, the double wall cardboard box is the perfect shipping partner.

Properties of corrugated cardboard boxes

The eponymous core of both single and double wall cardboard boxes is the so-called flute or flute web, which is located between two smooth paper webs, the so-called top webs. In contrast to single-flute cardboard packaging, double-flute packaging - as the name suggests - has two flutes. Due to the higher number of corrugated webs, double wall cardboard packaging is able to protect the cargo more effectively, as the two corrugations can absorb a higher physical energy that acts on the transport packaging in case of a fall or impact. Instead of two cover lanes enclosing one corrugated lane, the twin corrugated have three lanes, with an intermediate lane separating the two corrugated lanes and the two outer cover lanes enclosing the corrugations. The corrugations of these tracks are sinusoidal in shape. The versatility of double wall cardboardis shown by the different dimensions of the flute formats, which can vary depending on the purpose. The variants range from the so-called A-flute, a coarse flute, to the so-called G-flute, a mini flute. An extreme form is the N-wave, which is also a mini-wave, but much thinner than the G-wave. The dimensions of G- and N-flutes are not standardised. In the production of double wall cardboard packaging, different wave types can be combined with each other, which support and complement each other through their different properties. The packaging becomes more robust and thus offers greater protection for the cargo. Double flute cardboard packaging has a higher tare weight compared to single flute cardboard.

Production of double wall packaging

The production of this product largely corresponds to the production of the single-flute variants. First, the corrugated web is corrugated in the corrugating unit by passing the paper web through two corrugating rolls or corrugating rollers. The gear wheels of the corrugating rolls determine the shape of the corrugations. To be able to form the paper web more effectively, it is moistened and then heated by the heated corrugating rolls. In the same step, the corrugated web is glued to the cover web, resulting in a single-flute corrugated board. In contrast to single-flute cardboard, two single-flute corrugated board webs are produced simultaneously, which are glued to the third cover web, the intermediate web, in the final production step. The result is robust double wall cardboardpackaging!

Versatile use, whether at home or in the factory

As double wall cardboard boxes are considerably more robust than single wall ones, they are suitable for a wider range of applications. These packages are ideal as moving boxes, as two flutes offer higher and better protection. They are also significantly more stable and tear-resistant than the single flute cardboard box. Because of this protection, these cardboard boxes are also ideal as postal parcels or consignments of goods for heavy or fragile goods. Last but not least, the double wall cardboard box is characterised by a significantly higher stackability.
