Bag-in-Box: Hard shell, soft core

A simple principle that has been found in nature for millions of years and is used for bag-in-boxes - such as eggs, coconuts, shells, etc. The bag-in-boxes are made of a special material. A solid outer shell protects the delicate interior. In this case, it is several millimetres of stable corrugated cardboard that shields the precious, liquid contents from external influences.

Bag-in-box, or BiB for short, is actually nothing more than a foil bag enclosed in corrugated cardboard with a spout. Well-tried and just as simple as it is ingenious.

Bag-in-box can do much more than just filling juice

In our regions, you mostly see juices filled in BiBs, internationally the range goes much further: wines, edible & mineral oils, liquid soaps, cleaning agents/chemicals, liquid egg, concentrates, syrups, coffees, sauces, adhesives, paints, pharmaceuticals, ink or simply classic water. The possibilities are vast and with suitable (special) bags, almost any liquid can be filled. In our shop assortment we concentrate on the classic juice filling. In addition, the LLDPE bags are also suitable for water, oil, sauce, mixed herbs, punch, broth, soap, etc. without hesitation.

What's new? Bag-in-Box changes 2022

Just in time for the new BiB season, we have made some tweaks to our range.

Our 1.5 litre carton is becoming increasingly popular, so we have upgraded its quality. The new B-flute (formerly E-flute) makes it more stable, so that the outer carton has a longer lifespan and can therefore be used several times. And so that the boxes lying a little higher on the pallet do not require more storage space, we have optimised the palletisation and can now accommodate even more pieces. All in all, a real gain for storage and use.

But that's not all: the bags with a filling volume of 3 and 5 litres have been optimised at three points. By adapting the film material, they are now significantly more robust; additional welded seams underline this property. And since we live in times of resource savings, we go with this trend and have reduced the dimensions of the bags to their actual filling volume. This rules out too large filling quantities and subsequent problems with boxes that are too "small".

With the taps, things are getting more colourful this season. The colour of the tried-and-tested Vitop taps will change from black-red to white-red. This will ensure that the new wing taps are considered for recycling. Unfortunately, common sorting plants in waste recycling still have problems recognising black plastic and sort it out as residual waste.

Why buy BiB from [BOXXCO]?

We have had BiBs in our range for over 10 years. At that time, we had colourful printed motifs for different fruit juices. Currently, we are more neutral with a plain brown version, which is therefore suitable for many different contents.

Unfortunately, the global political and pandemic effects are also being felt in this product area this year - as bottlenecks and price increases for both films and cartons. Thanks to clever, forward-looking planning, we are able to keep prices largely stable. And we are also well positioned on the stock side. So at the end of the 2022 fruit juice season, there will still be enough bag-in-box systems available.

If you do not find what you are looking for in our shop assortment, contact us. We have a variety of special products available immediately, but not pictured online. We can also respond quickly and competently to customisation requests for boxes and bags.

The advantages are obvious

If you are not yet convinced to switch to bag-in-boxes from [BOXXCO], let me tell you this: BiBs are valuable packaging with many advantages over their competitors made of glass, plastic, tin, etc.!
  • 80 % of BiBs is corrugated board, 20 % plastic
  • reduced packaging waste, 100 % recyclable
  • light in weight
  • reduced volume & space-saving storage (original components flat on pallet, easily stackable without voids when filled).
  • lower freight/packing costs
  • less CO² emissions during transport
  • contents can be stored for longer after opening (no oxygen enters bag through valve)
  • no cork taste in wine
  • no subsequent bottle cleaning necessary
  • 73 % less water consumption than in the life cycle of a glass bottle (source: LeGuern and Tostivint 2010)

  • Bag-in-Box is not a single-use packaging. Bag-in-Box is a sustainable packaging.

Our expert tips for working smoothly with bag-in-box systems

  • store BiBs in their original packaging
  • always keep them dry
  • storage conditions should be between 10 ℃ and 30 ℃ and at a relative humidity of 20% to 80%.
  • allow to acclimatise under ambient conditions for at least 24 hours before use
  • protect from strong light (sun, electric lighting) and strong heat (radiators, electric heaters)
  • protect from strong smelling substances
  • bags made of materials for hot filling are suitable for filling at temperatures up to 90 ℃
  • store the filled bags with the taps facing upwards to reduce the pressure on the bungs to a minimum
