ESD – Proper Packaging and Shipping of Electronic Devices

Shipping electronic products is always a major challenge. There is even a technical term for this: ESD shipping is specifically tailored to electronic products and provides reliable packaging that can be used as protection.

Sensitive electronic products must always be properly packaged for both shipping and storage. It is necessary to use special ESD packaging here. If electronic devices experience an electrostatic discharge (ESD), the lifespan of individual components can be significantly affected. There are various types of packaging that can even be considered triggers for such discharges. Therefore, it is advisable to always use ESD packaging when shipping electronic devices.

In the carton shop, there is a wide selection of different ESD packaging that can be used for shipping and storing electronic devices. They are suitable for shipping items such as screens or graphics cards, data carriers, or even chips and measuring devices.

What is special about ESD packaging?

Electronic devices owe their functionality primarily to the sensitive components installed in them. Voltage fields, however, are not uncommon. These can lead to the so-called electrostatic discharges. The electronic components are particularly sensitive. Such ESD can damage them sustainably or even shorten their lifespan. Bubble wraps and packaging chips, which are actually supposed to protect the contents, can cause strong discharges. Therefore, it is all the more important to pay attention to proper packaging when packaging and shipping electronic devices.

ESD packaging is designed to protect electronic devices particularly well. Antistatic or dissipative materials are used in the manufacture of the packaging. These prevent dangerous discharges and ensure that the devices arrive safely at their destination. Even classic packaging materials, such as corrugated cardboard, can be coated with such a layer.

What types of ESD packaging are there?

The selection of ESD packaging is large. Particularly popular and frequently used are the conductive bags. These are small and handy and offer enough space, for example, for memory chips or graphics cards. The bags are marked and thus directly recognizable as ESD packaging. Conductive bubble wraps are also particularly popular for use with ESD. The sensitivity of electronic devices does not only refer to the installed technology and its properties. The devices themselves must also be protected. It is no secret that shipping companies do not handle shipments very gently. Therefore, it is all the more important to pay attention to good packaging.

Note: If products or goods arrive damaged at the recipient, the shipping service provider will first want to know how they were packaged. If they consider the packaging insufficient, compensation may be denied.

To avoid damage to the devices, conductive bubble wrap can be used. This is also conductive and can be used to safely package the goods. Foam packaging is also a very good choice for shipping electronic devices.

The Checklist – Properly Packaged Electronic Devices

There are always problems when shipping electronic packaging. It is particularly annoying when these devices arrive damaged. A small checklist can help to do everything right from the start when packaging:

  1. The item is wrapped in ESD bubble wrap. It may be worthwhile to be a bit more generous here.
  2. Now the box is taken. In the carton shop, there is the right ESD packaging for electronic devices. It is important that the stability is really sufficient. Especially heavy electronic devices must be packed in a sturdy box. Important: The box should be at least 130% the size of the device. This leaves enough space to accommodate bubble wrap and properly secure the device.
  3. The securing in the package is important. Even if a lot of ESD bubble wrap is added, the device must be secured. If it can slide in the box, damage may occur. The padding should therefore no longer be movable.
  4. Use stickers – Stickers indicating "Fragile" should not be forgotten to show that the package contains sensitive goods. Even if this often does not make much impression on the shipping company, the sender can prove that they did everything for the product's safety.

Note: Some shippers require electronic devices to be "double boxed." This means they must be packaged using the box-in-box system. The reason for this is the fact that the boxes can often fall from a great height onto a hard floor during shipping. To ensure the devices are optimally secured, it does not hurt to use two ESD packages here.

Insured shipping is always recommended. If damage does occur and it can be proven that the device was properly packaged, the shipping company must compensate the sender financially.
