The Euro Pallet – Practical Pallets for Transport
The Euro pallets, also known as Euro pool pallets or simply as pallets, are reusable pallets for transport. Due to the special construction of the models, the pallets can be maneuvered particularly well and can also be picked up with a forklift.
The areas of application for the pallets mainly relate to the industrial sector. Since the Euro pallet has standardized dimensions, the machines for industrial use are tailored to the pallet. The pallets are usually loaded onto semi-trailers, container bodies, or swap bodies. There is enough space here to load two pallets crosswise or three pallets lengthwise. They are also suitable for stacking. However, if they are loaded with fragile items, pallet cones can be used to visually warn against stacking further contents.
Dimensions and Weight of the Euro Pallet – An Overview of Euro Pallet Dimensions
- Weight of Euro pallet: between 20 kg and 24 kg
- Size of Euro pallet: 1200 x 800 x 144 mm – Length x Width x Height
- Base area of Euro pallet: 0.96 square meters
- Fastening of Euro pallet: 78 special nails
The Euro pallet is a four-way pallet. This means that the pallet can be accessed from all four different sides with a handling device. This significantly facilitates the work of loading and unloading.
The pallet itself is particularly robust. It can be loaded with high weights. When loaded precisely at a specific point, the weight must not exceed 1,000 kg. If the weight distribution is even, a load of up to 2,000 kg is possible. If it is used for shipping, special pallet shipping boxes or pallet containers are recommended.
The Markings on the Pallet
Various markings can be seen on the pallets. Since these are products manufactured according to the EPAL system, it is necessary to note certain markings on the pallets. An EPAL marking is located on the left corner block. EPAL stands for the European Pallet Association e.V. The marking itself is not legally required. However, it is usually demanded. In Italy, it must be noted on the pallet.
The manufacturer's code is also noted on the pallet. This is marked with a branding clip. Some pallets are repaired and then put back into circulation. If this is the case, it is necessary to equip the pallet with an inspection nail. This is attached to the middle block. Additionally, a second inspection nail is attached to one of the long sides. The EUR sign is noted on the right corner block.
There is also a fastening with an oval border on the left block. The abbreviation EPAL is also found here. The middle block offers enough space for the company marking. This is also bordered. The marking depends on the company. There is also a reference to the country of manufacture. A repair nail can also be used here. Additionally, there is a quality inspection clip. The numbers noted here represent the manufacturer number, the year of manufacture, and the month of manufacture. There is also an IPPC marking indicating that it is pest-free wood. An additional EPAL sign is also attached to the right block.
The Differences in Euro Pallets
Anyone looking for a pallet and wanting to buy one will quickly find that there are some differences. There are a total of five subdivisions.
- The new Euro pallet is delivered by the manufacturer. It can also be ordered directly from the manufacturer. Especially in the food industry, but also in the delivery of pharmaceuticals, only new pallets are used.
- The like-new Euro pallet may be involved in no more than two different exchange processes. It is mainly used in classic industrial operations. It is important that the wood of the pallet is still completely intact and no wood splinters are visible.
- The used and exchangeable pallet can be passed on but already has one or two defects. This means that splintering and discoloration are not uncommon. These pallets are used in companies and freight forwarding.
- The worn-out pallets are no longer exchangeable. They may no longer be used.
- The repaired pallets were once non-exchangeable pallets and have been repaired. Repairs may only be carried out by licensed companies. They are made recognizable by the nail seal and can then be used again as exchangeable pallets.
However, the question arises as to when exactly a pallet is actually exchangeable. There are precise definitions that must be adhered to. As long as the pallet was manufactured by a licensed company according to EPAL criteria, has all the markings, and no boards are missing, it can be exchanged. However, the boards must not show severe damage. It is also necessary that the blocks are still present. If a pallet has been repaired by a company that is not licensed, it may no longer be exchanged.
Important: The repair of the pallet must therefore take place in certain companies because the regulations are precisely specified here. Everything from rough repairs to the use of nails is precisely recorded and must be implemented accordingly. If this does not happen, it can lead to criminal prosecution. Counterfeit Euro pallets pose a safety risk.
